There is nothing unhygienic about TP ot TP tubes.
A TP roll that has been sitting right next to your toilet, being handled by people who are in the process of using the toilet, can definitely become unhygienic.
But the cardboard tube is covered by toilet paper up until you remove that last square of tp. The cardboard barely gets touched. If it makes you feel better, OP, you can ask your family to save rolls once they’re down to just a few sheets of tp, and then set them aside for crafts. Then you can remove those last few sheets yourself and then wash your hands.
Np. The inside of the tube and the ring on the side are not fully covered by paper. They are partially exposed to aerosolized poop particles after flushing. Your method reduces the hygiene problem dramatically, but not completely. Unless you can guarantee that all members of your house and all guests are closing the toilet lid when flushing, that toilet paper roll is still a little dirty. That said... almost no one worries about this. The tp roll being a little dirty isn't that big of a deal. Lots of things that kids play with are a little dirty.
