What kind of fields? My kids play softball, which means all dirt infield, and so those fields close all. the. time.
Plus they build more turf baseball fields than softball fields because Title 9 doesn't matter it appears.
No, softball can't use turf because the infield needs to be a fast (dirt) surface so a ground ball isn't slowed down due to the structure of a softball (vs a baseball). Also, softball is played on a 60' field - there aren't many 60' turf fields around.
The bolded isn't true at all. Plenty of softball games are played on turf. Just because there's still more small ball in softball than baseball doesn't mean it can't be played on turf - especially at the lower levels! Fairfax County is turfing over all the softball fields at Wakefield Park, starting with field 8 sometime this year. They already allocated the money for it a couple years ago. It's true there aren't many 60' turf fields around, but that's because they chose not to do it, not because they couldn't or shouldn't. My kid was practicing with 3 other teams on a 90' turf baseball field last night, just to get reps in.
