It's a pre-sale lottery for a _chance_ to purchase tickets. While it's open now to join, you also have unil 9/19 to enter, so no rush.

I plan to put in for the US games (all 3 on west coast -- I'll buy an extra ticket then offer a local friend there to join me if they let me crash at their place); and then the games in Philly and NYC (actually NJ) as those are pretty easy to get to from here.

If you just want to see a game, this is the time to get in. The team draw (for all except US/CAN/MEX, which are already set as hosts) is on 12/7. My contact at US Soccer says as soon as that draw is done, hotels in every city will get fully booked, now that German/UK/Brazilian/etc fans know for sure their team will be playing at X city on Y date, and that is also when ticket demand will go up. If you get in now, you could end up with some random teams you don't care about, like Japan vs Costa Rica (both very good teams actually), but it will still be a good atmosphere, and you're likely to actually get tickets. I've been to multiple world cup games before, and FIFA does put on a good show.

Check your summer travel plans against the schedule. The venues and dates are alraedy determined. For example, the week of June 21, there are games in NYC and Philly on 6/22, 6/25, and 6//27. The following weeks, only 2 games in the area: 6/30 in NYC and 7/4 in Philly.
