Will you encourage or discourage your Freshman to join a fraternity or sorority? I never joined because I did not want to pay money for a group of older students to force me to clean their house, wash their cars, attend mandatory drinking parties, wear conforming clothes, and be abused in a hazing ritual. I withstood the peer pressure and opted out. I will encourage my children to opt out also when it comes time for college.
Most frats are mainly for White (or Black) kids. Not very inclusive. Very segregated racially. Most members behave like a-holes. Don't know about sororities. We are not White, and literally every kid in our family that attended college and went to frat parties talks about how racist members are towards non-Whites. One nephew did join a frat and, other than 'bro affectations', didn't get much out of it. Almost all of these kids are doing well in life, high paying jobs or on the way to one (e.g. med/law school). The couple that are not doing that well are in that position due to lack of academic achievement and ambition rather than lack of a frat network. Lack of frat/soro membership has had no impact on their network or qol, during or after college.
