my husband took the fork and also medically retired. He is 54. It was a great deal. He is officially retired. He is volunteering at a local museum and seems to have gotten into a hobby. I have a good non-government related job so we are totally good. He has become a much happier person
I'm curious what you mean by "medically retired". Was he not eligible for VERA (not enough years in service)? I know someone with a disability that is 54 and they took the fork and VERA. Was there some other, better option besides VERA that they could have taken?
there is a medical retirement option- he has some health issues and qualified. He gets 40% of his salary until he is 62 and then he gets full retirement. the 8 years to get to 62 counts as service time so he will retire with over 30 years. we ran the numbers with a financial person and the medical retirement made more sense. He can get another job (as long as he doesn't make more than he made full time) but for right now he is enjoying the downtime. We hired a lawyer to do the paperwork. it was money well spent.
