The fact that MCPS and the BOE think it's ok for students and staff to feel unsafe at school regularly, year after year, with no consequence or meaningful change is a disgrace. Thomas Taylor, Marcus Jones and Peter Moran should be ashamed of themselves. And the BOE should be held accountable by the County Council for failing in its oversight responsibilities.
What’s your alternative? Bring back suspensions? That’s been shown to be racist. Expulsions? All that does is support the school to corporate prison pipeline. And this is America; every student is innocent until they are proven in a court of law; besides: what about their education? Don’t they have a right to an equal education too? Can’t do that if you are constantly suspending kids (plus their acting out really isn’t their fault. If they got the wrap-around services they deserve then none of this would be an issue.)
Suspensions- absolutely! They are no implicitly racist. Have clear guidelines as to what leads to suspension, then don’t worry about it. If one group gets suspended more, then they deserve it! Expulsion- absolutely! These are the kids who will end up in prison anyways. Do you know how hard it is to get expelled? Every kid has a right to an equal education. Your little dream world ignores the 98% of kids who are well behaved and want to learn so that 2% don’t feel bad about their behaviors. Acting out is their fault failing any special needs. And even those students need consequences for their actions. Things should be fair so that all kids feel safe in school.
