Why is there such a huge deficit of ATCs in the first place, why so many openings? Why is there no talent training, recruitment and pipeline strategy for this field, on a national level? Trump needs to put one in place because air safety is critical.
The requirements are super tough. https://www.faa.gov/air-traffic-controller-qualifications Then even if you meet the requirements, you have to relocate to Oklahoma City for training, then you have to relocate again for your on the job training for 2-3 years, and then you’re a full fledged ATC. But you still have to maintain the ongoing health requirements. I do agree that maybe our high schools and community colleges, and even 4 year colleges, should do a better job of promoting careers in air traffic control though.
Or maybe we should focus on education so that more kids would be equipped to undergo true training for such jobs. Frankly this should be front page news. What happened to good American jobs being filled by American. The fact that FAA training happens in Oklahoma is even more amazing given where they rank nationally for education and seem to be trying to find the basement.
The FAA has had huge operations in Oklahoma for 50 years. There is and has been a thriving air-oriented community there. Just because it is in the middle ina non-DCUM approved area doesn't immediately render it unfit for human use.
Are you insinuating that people travel to Oklahoma for FAA training? On airplanes? Without any qualified ATC? Preposterous!
