Not all cats kill rats - all cat food attracts rats.

What you don't realize is just the scent of a cat nearby is helpful to keep rats and mice away. The cat doesn't even need to hunt them.

Your last sentence is very unscientific. Surely you can understand that fragile bird species might be endangered long before you notice they’re absent from your yard.
