Can dyspraxia exist without autism?
Yes! DS has it. It presented as childhood apraxia of speech but he had global coordination issues so dyspraxia is often used interchangeably. We started with speech, a developmental pediatrician and OT at age 2. We also saw a neurologist whose main contribution was to do genetic testing (no findings). In his case, no expert saw any symptoms of autism. His lack of motor coordination presented as falling a lot, not able to jump, not able to cross legs, unable to follow simple instructions. He did intensive speech and years and years of OT. Both were life changing. Nobody would know today unless you gave him a completely novel motor task. The OT broke down motor plans and taught us to do the same. We then taught each component by putting his body through the movement hundreds of times. We worked with him every single day. He more than beat the pessimistic prognosis the neurologist provided. I am forever grateful to our OT. She saw him from 2-9.
