From my experience, when men form an emotional attachment to someone else, they may have trouble moving on from the relationship even years after. I got back with my ex last summer. We were broken up for about 4 years. While I tried to get back together for a while after we initially broke up, I managed to move on. We retained loose contact. When we got back together last year, he told me that for the 4 years we were broken up, he said he felt still deeply attached to me and entertained the idea and desire to get back together eventually.
