Thanks all I’ll take a look at that site. You have to realize that the first time I heard about stocks was in law school. My parents taught me nothing and I knew nothing. I tried in college to ask about an IRA they said I’d lose the money and it’s a scam. I have invested since I started work but with law school loans I couldn’t do much those are forgiven now - another reason why I went in public service. I need to catch up - as in I already max things and have tiny tiny 529 and realize it’s not enough. I would be committing if there is a growth in a business. I have this anxiety about leaving feds bc what if I lose my job then I have nothing again and I’ll be like my parents. I’m young and maxed out level wise so I have the skills and experience.
This highlights another point. If you want family wealth, you need to educate your children about responsible personal financial management, and about investing. As they earn money from their own jobs, even part-time jobs when they're younger, they should be thinking about budgeting and investing for the long term. Both you and they can start here: https://investor.vanguard.com/resources-education/personal-finance https://investor.vanguard.com/resources-education/investment-types https://investor.vanguard.com/resources-education/retirement Time is your ally, not speculating with your savings on a business which, statistically, is far more likely to fail than to succeed in the long run: https://www.lendingtree.com/business/small/failure-rate/ And, total failure is not the only probable outcome - making only a modest income is more likely than getting "rich", and meanwhile you have to consider opportunity costs - what could the money invested in a business (not to mention your time) have done for you if invested passively and sensibly?
