Speaking as an immigrant of color, I'm not surprised a Democratic politician said something this breathtakingly racist and I'm not surprised that people here who fancy themselves so smart and progressive are defending her. People like me know from long experience that, under the manipulative rhetoric that only Republicans are racist and Democrats are just so openhearted, both parties have maintained racist and disgusting immigration policies. In fact, Obama was worse than Trump has ever been. The way Obama terrorized immigrants regardless of legal status has been memory holed because Democrats don't really care. Under Obama, ICE snatched undocumented immigrants off the streets like Trump is doing, but Obama outdid Trump because his ICE agents routinely abducted and terrorized naturalized citizens too purely based on country of origin. I personally have citizen family members who were held for weeks at ICE facilities under excuses like the State Department records show you're citizen, but the Social Security Administration doesn't have record of your naturalization, so cool your heels in this retrofitted, overcrowded upstate NY jail for no reason at all while we deny to your family members that we have you. Obama's administration was the first time I ever felt afraid to be an immigrant in America, even though I am a highly educated, law-abiding, naturalized citizen. Suddenly, TSA started detaining me for hours a time for extra vetting every time I went on vacation or a work trip outside the country. My career suffered terribly. I didn't hear anything about sanctuary cities back then when it was a Democratic president terrorizing immigrants. Blue state authorities didn't hesitate then to cooperate with ICE agents in knowingly unlawfully seizing even legal immigrants. Just a handful of nonprofits made themselves available to help us and we could hardly get on the news. So, any immigrant who has been here long enough knows that Democrats aren't fighting Trump's stepped-up deportation policies out of high mindedness. It's because first and foremost fighting Trump is good politics for them. If Trump issued an executive order declaring the color of the sky to be blue, Democrats would oppose it just because. Second, the white, wealthy business interests that fund Democrats want to keep immigrants as an underpaid, exploited, and highly profitable underclass. That's why Democrats are inculcating their base with their oligarchy's talking points by pointing out how they need us as ass wipers. And, as you fine people here show, their upper middle class white base is very accepting of those talking points because you're not good people either. Stop lying to yourselves that you're not just more delusional, sometimes better educated versions of your MAGA relatives.
