Unless there’s a possibility of treating early with paxlovid, there is no reason to identify whether it is COVID other than to satisfy curiosity. Same as the flu, if it’s too late for Tamiflu, it doesn’t matter what the virus is, you just treat the symptoms. I have had multiple doctors tell me this over the last few years, each time I’ve taken a kid for a strep test but declined the full panel of additional tests that would make zero difference in their medical care.
