The state sets the English requirements, not MCPS. Courses need to be either MCAP aligned or college equivalent. The MCPS standard grade level classes have approved by the state as MCAP aligned, electives are not. AP/IB/dual enrollment are all college equivalent. That’s the story.

If your kid doesn’t want to take AP Lit or Dual Enrollment, then it’s Honors English 12. Just suck it up and do it online in summer school to get the credit and then take the elective she wants during the year.[/quote]

A) The state requirement is 1 credit must be aligned with MCAP of which for most it’s the English 10 as that is the assessment.

B) Many times you can’t take a course like Honors English 12 in Summer for original credit

You are just full of complaints and not looking for solutions. Take honors or grade level English 12 for free through OPTG next school year in the evenings and take the elective during the school day. Or ask the counselor to approve summer school for original credit and a co up the cost.

Or…just have your child take an approved class!![/quote]
