OP here.  The benefit of being together for many years before marriage and going through several Clomid and IUI cycles together before even being engaged is that we have had a lot of time to have this discussion.  My SO DID have to think it through and consider pros and cons before feeling ready to get married.  And I needed to know he had done so.  I still hope (and even pray) I can bring a little him into this world but, as best we know, think we'll stick it out together either way.  But I DO understand your sentiment.  Part of the reason I wish that the certificate wasn't important was that I'd like to know before marriage where this fertility story ends.[/quote]
