1. The father (or a US citizen if the father doesn’t have legal residency here) needs to fly down to Honduras and bring the child back. Yes it sucks that the child will be without his mother but she doesn’t have legal status - so that was always a possibility. 2. How often does the kid need the lifesaving medicine? Is it available in Honduras? Are people even asking common sense stuff like this or are we just sticking to outrage and not actually helping this child? Also, we need to give the mother some agency. Possibly she was coerced into taking her child with her. That should be investigated. But if she decided it was in her child’s best interest to stay with her - like maybe she knows more about his cancer treatment than we do and determined he could get the treatment he needs in Honduras - then we should respect her parental decisions.
If I’m getting kicked out of a place, be it a restaurant or a country, and I’m not allowed to reach out to my partner or anyone else I trust to take my children, especially if one has cancer and needs medical treatment, yeah, I’m going to take them with me. What’s the other choice? Give them to the people kicking me out and won’t let me even gather their medication or reach out to their father? We’re approaching Sophie’s Choice territory here. Give her some agency? How about just give her her child’s medication? Also, based on how ICE is repeatedly approaching people without uniforms or visible badges, sometimes in masks, grabbing people off the street in ways that really look like they’re being abducted… even if they are legit and show ID and warrants once they get to the detention center or wherever they take the mom and her kids, how could she possibly trust them enough to leave her children with them and have faith that her kids will make it to their father? This seems unnecessarily brutal and cruel. I get that’s what they’re going for, but come on.
