https://www.cbsnews.com/amp/colorado/news/misgendering-colorado-transgender-rights-bill-impact-child-custody-cases/ I see there are protections for transgender people in this bill that are positive. But NO WAY should the state be able to forcibly remove your custody of your children. If they feel you don’t affirm their gender identity, it’s child abuse. What about kids who may be confused and need professional help to work through if they truly feel that way.
The bill summary does NOT say this, and Jarvis mischaracterized the bill. What it says: Section 2 provides that, when making child custody decisions and determining the best interests of a child for purposes of parenting time, a court shall consider deadnaming, misgendering, or threatening to publish material related to an individual's gender-affirming health-care services as types of coercive control. A court shall consider reports of coercive control when determining the allocation of parental responsibilities in accordance with the best interests of the child. That's not alleging abuse. That simply puts this into the context of best interests, which is inherently broad. Coercive control can be expressed in all manner of ways.
Here is how the CO bill defines coercive control. They equate it to child abuse. Tell me that no parent will lose custody or be prosecuted for this..... "Coercive control" means a pattern of threatening, humiliating, or intimidating actions, including assaults or other abuse, that is used to harm, punish, or frighten an individual. "Coercive control" includes a -2- 1312 1 pattern of behavior that takes away the individual's liberty or freedom and 2 strips away the individual's sense of self, including the individual's bodily 3 integrity and human rights. "Coercive control" includes isolating the 4 individual from support, exploiting the individual, depriving the 5 individual of independence, and regulating the individual's everyday 6 behavior. "Coercive control" includes, but is not limited to, any of the 7 following: 8 (VIII) Threatening to publish the individual's, or the individual's 9 child's or relative's, sensitive personal information, including sexually 10 explicit material OR MATERIAL RELATED TO GENDER-AFFIRMING 11 HEALTH-CARE SERVICES, AS DEFINED IN SECTION 12-30-121 (1)(c), or 12 make reports to the police or authorities; 13 (X) Threatening the individual, or the individual's child or 14 relative, with deportation or contacting authorities based on perceived or 15 actual immigration status, withholding essential documents required for 16 immigration, or threatening to withdraw or interfere with an active 17 immigration application or process; or 18 (XI) Forcing the individual, or the individual's child or relative, 19 to take part in criminal activities or child abuse; OR 20 (XII) DEADNAMING OR MISGENDERING, AS THOSE TERMS ARE 21 DEFINED IN SECTION 24-34-301, THE INDIVIDUAL OR THE INDIVIDUAL'S 22 CHILD OR RELATIVE. https://leg.colorado.gov/sites/default/files/documents/2025A/bills/2025a_1312_ren.pdf
