I know a professor in nursing at a major school. She has been getting grants for years, but she has been all over the world with these grants. Speaking here, speaking there. And she acts like this is ok. Retirement, teach a couple of classes, get grants to travel. How do I get a grant?
Step 1: have a useful, in-demand skill Step 2: apply for the grant Step 3: get paid to do what you love & are good at Not that hard, really. My aunt is a retired DNP (Doctor of Nursing Practice) with a Neonatal Specialty. She's never been a tenured professor, but she's still pretty highly in-demand for training workshops and some speaking engagements. How is it not ok to get paid to share your skills and knowledge with younger generations training in your specialty? Do you think they should do it for free from the goodness of their hearts just because they are older and retired? Grants are critical in all aspects of healthcare. I'm in digital forensics. Law enforcement agencies get grants (local, state, & federal) to pay me to come train their forensic examiners on how to use the software of the company I work for. Yeah, that training includes travel. I was in FL last week and I'll be in OR next week. At the end of the month I'll be traveling to Germany for a conference and then teaching a course after that before going to Dubai the following week for another conference.
