Umm, what is he referencing when he says “like what happened in Germany” and mentions people trying to “help people that were in unbelievable distress”? I’m afraid to hear the answer.
OP here. I added the full transcript. It took some digging to find. You know how the majority of people keep saying Palestinians vs Israelis instead of Hamas vs Netanyahu|IDF? It’s frustrating to no end. And it’s why there’s a huge divide and no one is allowed to “both sides.” We weep for the Israelis killed, raped, maimed, and taken hostage. We weep for the innocent Palestinians who have been killed, raped, maimed, and orphaned. I really don’t want to sanewash anything Trumps says, but I think he meant to compare Palestinians (not Hamas) with Germans (not Nazis). Many Germans (not Nazis) tried to help the Jewish people. Whether it was as simple as a loaf of bread or hiding them in their homes. Others helped them escape the Holocaust by securing their “papers” and transport to other countries. Some innocent Palestinians (not Hamas) treated Israeli hostages with compassion, extra food, medical treatment. Sadly, these were mostly hostages kept in homes. You’d have to read or watch interviews of the released hostages. Of course there aren’t many speaking about it. Netanyahu silences them because it might harm the remaining hostages.
In the context of what happened to Jews on the whole, I think saying “many” German citizens tried to help them is a stretch. Some tried to help. More than a handful. But many?
Why would you even comment on this? I responded to someone who questioned what the hell Trump was talking about. Again, Hamas did not “show love” to Israelis and Nazis did not show anything but murderous contempt for Jews. So I offered a logical thought that he may have meant anti Hamas Palestinians vs anti Nazi Germans. I’m not defending his idiocy. We don’t know the exact number of Germans, but overall it’s estimated that hundreds of thousands non Jewish people including Germans helped them. Germans were killed trying to rescue Jewish families. How would we know? The depth of secrecy and anonymity was crucial to stay alive. Never forget that the U.S. turned them away. Only the early arrivers who had means, wealth, or notoriety were welcomed. Regardless, Trump still remains a malignant narcissistic madman.
Your theory of what Trump was getting at makes sense; but it just underscores that he’s talking about apples and oranges. You can’t compare how Jews who weren’t in the custody of Nazis were treated by German civilians with how Oct 7th hostages were treated by Hamas foot soldiers.
