I feel horrible about this. Should I let the owner know I can’t hang out in the house with the cats, but they are watered and fed? I don’t want her to worry on her vacation and there’s nothing she can do from the middle of the Caribbean Sea. [/quote]

Did you check the bed?  Cats are know to display their anger by using bed for their litter box![/quote]
