A few years ago I was talking with a friend of a friend, and she mentioned she can't go to Canada because she had a DUI. Is that true? Will Canada really not let non-citizens in if they have committed a crime?
Yes, but they can file paperwork before the visit or at the border for a TRP. Canada doesn't have to grant the TRP, but there is a way to appeal the blanked no access for those with DUIs on their record. Also, just because you are granted TRP once doesn't meant you'll get it again. And submitting the TRP paperwork ahead of time can be expensive because you have to use a proxy in Canada. My cousin had no issue getting a TRP when he was accompanying his son's class on a trip there. He applied beforehand and it was granted so there would be no holdup or issues at the border. However, he was denied access a few years ago when trying to travel for a wedding.
