Rs have continually demonized nonwhite immigrants who are in the country legally. Asylum seekers, among others, are here legally even if not permanently. But they are falsely accused of gang activity, falsely accused of eating pets, detained by cops who don't want to see proof of legal status, etc. Also, you would have to work to miss the recent story of a Canadian woman jailed because her visa was denied - she showed up to present the application (legal), was denied (fine) and then instead of being allowed to fly back to Canada she was jailed for two weeks and only got out because of media attention.
