The heat...even in September Rome was very very hot. Plus not being able to check into most hotels until 3/4pm, while arriving at 7am was brutal. That's always an issue with direct flights to Europe from DC, but when we brought our 3 kids it was particularly hard.
This is why I always book the hotel for the night before and call to let them know we will be arriving early morning. A few hours nap, showers, and we are good to go. Also helps with jet lag.
+1 same. Those people who say to power through when you land and not sleep until night are crazy to me. I need immediate check in and a nap.
x 100 consider it an investment in your vacation. It's with every single penny. I had a great time in Italy and Greece but I can see where if you don't account for the heat, it's miserable. People think it's like DC or Florida. It's on a whole other level that will give you headaches and make you sick. For example, you only go to the Acropolis early morning or evening. You plan for Pompeii and have lots of water (there is a restaurant in the middle and some fountains, but the line is long). Siestas exist for a reason. Use the hot afternoon hours to relax and you'll be fine
