Wow. Surprised about all the high stats rejections and wait lists. Do you think this is a yield protection situation? Where they want you to push hard on continued interest so they know you won't turn them down? (Did you all visit or otherwise demonstrate a bunch of interest prior to applying?) Also, glad to hear of an alum's kid who got in RD. We keep hearing legacies of various schools need to apply ED - otherwise the schools will reject RD because they know they weren't first choice (even though you had plenty of info about the school via parents.)
Not yield protection because top stats kids are being admitted. It's just that competition is tough and they cannot accept all of the highly deserving top stats kids. It's a sad fact, which is also true for other top schools.
It’s a great school with a huge endowment (bigger than Duke) and amazing campus. On paper it’s hard to differentiate versus an Ivy League school but of course it doesn’t have the historical brand prestige. But there are many more super qualified kids out there than Ivies can accommodate - so schools like WashU get them too - and like Ivies, WashU also has to reject many very top applicants. 9 pct RD acceptance rate is what it is.
