This is my biggest issue with the boundary changes. It is unconscionable that they did not guarantee to grandfather juniors and seniors, but chose to grandfather seniors only. I haven't written all school board members and the superintendent multiple times on this targeted issue. From the superintendent's team I got a straight out lie back that "there had been no decisions yet made about boundary changes or grandfathering". I promptly replied with a highlighted version of 8130 that had been approved and only includes seniors. Got back a "well, they can still decide to include more than seniors". Sure, can, but will they? I doubt it. I've written to Sandy Anderson multiple times and gotten back form letters than address nothing that I specifically ask her stance on. Our in person meeting at LBSS was LIVID when people found out only seniors are grandfathered to any changes. I've said before, we are on the line for a potential boundary shift from WSHS to Lewis or SoCo. I will be incredibly angry and do anything I can to keep my 2028 grad at WSHS for his junior and senior year. He is a freshman now, already signed up for AP sophomore courses not offered at Lewis. He's an athlete that is putting his time in on his JV team to build to varsity. He is in several clubs now and looking at leadership positions down the road. Pulling the rug out from under juniors is unbelievable. Now, my 2031 grad, we will try Lewis if we are moved with an open mind. If they keep IB, he's a great candidate for it. And maybe he'll do better at a less competitive school than WSHS. We can make it work, regardless. But, no moving juniors. That's insane.
Your Springfield rep is one who pushed for not including grandfathering when they revised 8130. I think she is the one who stated that rezoning high schoolers is a great opportunity for FCPS to teach them resiliency. It is on video, but months ago. You would need to watch some school board videos to confirm my memory is correct.
This makes me furious. She talks about being a part of a military family BUT also says that she did start her family until after they were settled here. She has no credibility on this. Her own kids have not been moved multiple times and from what I understand, are still in elementary school. She has no clue what it is like to move older kids and the impact it can have. As a parent and a teacher, I have seen the impacts, both positive and negative, of military moves. Many military families retire once their kids are in high school so they can finish in one place. In the WSHS pyramid, she is proposing to rip that away from kids who have had to be resilient their entire lives.
