Are you all saying that one C in one semester of an AP class is catastrophic in terms of college admissions? Guess my kid is heading to CC.
Depends on the high school and the college. Out of the W schools, UMD is getting quite competitive (less so for other high schools). Lots of kids with mostly As, some Bs, and no Cs on the transcript aren't getting admitted.
I’m the mom of the kid with the C in the class due to missed makeup but the 5 in the AP. So yes this teacher refusing to allow the makeup a little later is probably going to cost me a ton of money, as it probably takes UMCP off the table, even though kid will probably have over 15 APs with 4s and 5s in them. We also would have probably benefitted from percentages, as kid had a 89 in first Q and a 69 in second Q with the missed test. I didn’t know about the possibility of replacing the grade with a summer class, so may now look into that.
I suggest you strongly consider having your child retake the class during the summer before senior year to update the transcript before early action applications are due. My child's teacher didn't let my child make up a missed test (he was sick) and ended first quarter with a 79.4. She experienced some family/personal issues and checked out second quarter (didn't actively teach/provide in class instruction). Based on admissions and merit award results to date, retaking the class has worked in my child's favor. My child had a few B's (foreign language) and one semester of Hon Pre-Calc--I think a C would have ruined chances at UMD. It was a rough summer with an AP class condensed to 8 weeks and a FT summer job. Of course, we will never know but I didn't think it was worth taking a chance to leave it on the transcript and fortunately my child agreed.
