Deferred. Well in excess of their GPA and testing norms. Quite strong extracurriculars. Whatever happens longer term will advise my younger kids and classmates not to EA to Michigan. No need to waste time and stress on an institution that doesn't in fact do a real EA process (having heard last year and this year from fellow student and parents). Was on the fence with this kid as had heard of the very high deferral EA later to be admitted, and wish my DD hadn't wanted her time on this. Oh well, lesson learned.
+1 EA seems to be of no use for most colleges. Just do that one ED and RD everywhere else. Saves the kids lots of tension with all the deferrals. Most of the kids getting deferred have high stats and most likely have submitted a great application (essays etc.) even for EA
I think EA still matters. I think you get a fresher read and some schools will reject if you are not a fit. Plus being early communicates prioritization and interest. Looking for a job and interviewing is way more soul sucking than college apps. College apps are practice for being a white collar employment candidate.
