PP, you must not have kids or have a nanny so that kids don't coming shopping with you. Have you tried to unload your cart, keep your toddler occupied as you checkout and pay attention to the prices as they are rung up at the same time?
Ha! As I said, I am a penny pincher so no way no how do I have a nanny. I have one child who is 4.5. She knows to sit still and be quiet b/c I need to concentrate when the cashier is ringing things up. That has been drilled into her by now. And, if I need him/her (the cashier) to stop so I can clarify something, I speak up and ask right then and there. I know there are also people who will think, "Oh, you only have 1. . .you just wait," well, I am the oldest of 6 and did it while shopping with my younger siblings, as did my mother, of course. I've been doing it since I was a teenager. Just don't get addled or flustered; slow down and pay attention; you have just as much right to make sure it is done correctly as everyone else does.
