PR is great during spring break, op! OSJ is very crowded that week, fyi. But it’s still worth visiting. Driving/parking require patience. Definitely rent a car. Visit Luquillo beach and the kioskos before or after visiting El Yunque.
Thanks! We've been multiple times and know our way around pretty well. We'll definitely be at the kioskos and luquillo most days :)
DP and I’m jealous! Love that beach and Mojito Lab… and the relleno bowls place. The St Regis there is great if someone else is looking at that. There’s a big water park thing for kids on one end of the property.
Is the beach actually nice? Every time I start researching a trip to PR, I get talked out of it because the beaches don’t compare to other parts of the Caribbean. I’m worried I will be disappointed.
We have been to the St Regis (in Rio Grande), Isla Verde, Luquillo beach, and San Juan. In terms of waves I would rank them like this from roughest to calmest: San Juan, Isla Verde, Rio Grande, Luquillo. San Juan is the only one I would personally consider remotely “rough”. We laughed at the “rough surf warnings” in Rio Grande because it was like little baby waves compared to what we see in the mid Atlantic and NC beaches. The St Regis property is beautiful. It’s not the super clear blue water but still a blue green. It’s very pretty to look at and walk along. There are tons of sand dollars. We spent most of our time at the pools overlooking the beach because we went there without our kids. If they had been with us I am sure we would have gone in the ocean more. Luquillo is great for an afternoon. It’s a public beach with calm and clear water. The kiosks are good for lunch and a mojito. Very casual. I would personally recommend a hotel in Rio Grande or SJ over an Air BnB in Luquillo but it will be more expensive. We have been to other Caribbean islands and they are all great for different reasons. PR is easy to get to and relatively affordable, with some cool history and things to see. There’s something to be said for that. I’m not a snob who will only go to BVI or Anguilla.
