Second the arts poster. There were hidden essays in slide room that you couldn’t know about until you had portal access and even in the school questions of the common app where the essay was hidden until you selected a major on the drop down menu. Very frustrating. Artists/dancers/etc already have to extra preparation of portfolio etc. Hiding essays and references etc is over the top. Have you kid email the dance department for a list of requirements. Ask about surprise essays!
Third the arts posters about hidden essays. I would also add to look at safety, targets and reach with the added layer of arts. My kid had an okay arts portfolio (no awards and not in a magnet program) with strong academics. For competitive universities with a top 20 arts program with a portfolio requirement, in hindsight they needed to apply undecided and be willing to major in something arts adjacent because the portfolio was not strong enough. The arts programs were sometimes single digit acceptance rates, more selective than the overall selective university, and it wasn’t always obvious that there was a second choice option if not accepted into the arts program. Programs that allowed them to major in that field with a later portfolio review or were beyond the top 50 for that program ended up being their safety and target schools.
