As a mom of a recent Pitt acceptee, I appreciate the above post SO VERY MUCH. We've not toured, but it looks amazing and could be a very good fit for DS. Thank you!
PP. Pitt's campus would be somewhat comparable to George Washington University. Pitt has more architecturally-significant buildings and is near the big local museum (National Gallery of Art x Natural History Museum mash-up). But they have the same level of "urban feel". Pitt is walking, campus shuttle, and city bus centric for transport. GWU seems to be walking plus Metro. Pitt students need to ride buses to professional theater, professional orchestra, pro sports, and college football. Not sure if anyone shops for clothes in downtown Pittsburgh anymore, but we used to go by bus. So I would say Pitt students do interact with the larger city. But Oakland is the home base. Pitt's collegetown area is serviceable like GWUs for restaurants and shops. But could have made more progress in the last 30 years. Covid killed off a few places I miss. If anyone is a foodie or very picky about urban streetscapes, this is a weaker point. Having graduated from Pitt and having a Pitt alum husband with a Georgetown Master's, we both still prefer Pitt's built environment to GWU. Foggy Bottom is also gritty. If you go to Pitt to visit, try touring the Nationality Rooms, peek into the Frick Fine Arts Building (courtyard and library), the reception rooms at the William Pitt Union, and go to the Carnegie Museum. These are some of the enjoyable settings from my college days that make me feel like I got a great liberal arts education in a great place. Eating at the nearby chain restaurants at the base of the main dorm complexes gives a whole different feel. There are great places to eat in Pittsburgh but they are certainly not clustered in a large group in Oakland. Many people on here have recommended the glass box restaurant across from Hillman Library. I also found that the cafe at the Phipps Conservatory looks good on paper. Carnegie Museum's cafeteria is fine and I like museum cafes everywhere for atmosphere, so that's an option. I hope you enjoy Pittsburgh if you visit. I moved away in 1991 (to MoCo) but have a real fondness for the city. I have lived in CA, MD, MI and been all over the world. Pittsburgh is a great smaller metro area with some beautiful places and interesting things to do. It's worthy of the pride that I share with you. :)
