I know a lot about diamonds, and if I were to buy one today -- or any diamond jewelry, really -- I'd buy lab. You want a well cut diamond; cut is the most important part of the four c's, it is what is going to make it sparkle. I'd put carat second. As far as clarity goes all you need is eye clean, no sense in paying for clarity above that. And color really depends on how sensitive you are to it, and what you are going to set it in (if setting in yellow gold, you can go all the way to a I, or even a J or K if you aren't color sensitive; and I'll add here that some actually prefer a warmer diamond).

It's true there is pretty much no resale market for a lab diamond, and there is a resale market for mined diamonds. But the resale market for mined diamonds ain't exactly great, so you shouldn't be buying diamonds counting on the idea of selling them down the line anyway.
