Churchill might be rich, but Blair.. hmmmm
Cost: “Dues for the Fall season are $1,250 and the Spring season is also $1,250. Winter conditioning is recommended for all who wish to row in the spring; the fee for Winter conditioning is $400, and are available at a reduced rate for members of the Silver Spring YMCA ($300).“
This is a private group. Thats not expensive at all for club.
You would think, no? Not expensive at all for a club but that's still a significant cost for a family in this already expensive area. To assume that everyone who wants to join can afford that is ridiculous.
Exactly 👆 Compare that to what it cost to join a rec soccer, basketball or football team. Yes, when families start to join club teams in those sports the cost go up but that is also the reason that not everyone joins those. Those clubs also recruit and provide financial aide. Do you think the cost would come down just because MCPS made it an officially sponsored sport?

You would think, no??
No. MCPS doesn’t have any of the facilities to be able to provide access to crew short of maybe bus transportation which has its own cost. They would likely want to see teams compete against one another in the county and the state so there would be uniform cost. Each school would need a coach or at the least there would need to be Assistant coaches added to the current teams to help ensure order and that other kids were getting a chance. And all the same equipment rental, space reservation, and training cost would be the same.
Mcps does not provide transportation for swim or uniforms. Only one coach. But we don’t have the facilities for crew.
That’s exactly my point. If MCPS isn’t providing transportation or uniforms for swim which has less cost than crew, why would anyone think that crew would become less costly for participants just because the district “offers” it as an official sport.
Club sports are private sports. So, this is even a silly discussion. There are crew teams associated with specific schools but they are private clubs that anyone can join. Many are not competitive and welcome all. Blair does.
The point of this thread was understanding why more kids were not interested as with more kids it could be an official district sport.
