I'm not obese but I think medicines are to help everyone. Everyone should take them, especially if they have high blood pressure and high cholesterol and these medicines help that. Pre diabetic and they help lose weight and all those symptoms go away? Who doesn't want that? It would take so much pressure off our health systems.
Which is why the insurance companies should cover the meds as if they're statins (or those little blue pills!) and not re-tier them so patients are paying 300-500 a month as many will in 2025. If their insurance covers at all. I have a friend who has successfully lost 45 lbs this year (still not at target BMI) and is now off her cholesterol meds, a co-worker says he lost about 10% of his weight and is now off BP meds. Their docs want them to continue to get to target goals, but in both cases, their federal insurance plans, which are required to carry at least one GLP-1 for weight loss, have jacked up the prices from under $100/month to several hundred. We've all seen the stories that compare US prices for the drugs to those elsewhere. If anyone wants to point a finger, wave it at the profiteers, not the patients.
They absolutely should! They could stop paying for other chronic disease medications and complications and (gasp!) make more money! When do you think they'll catch on?
