Moved after living in good districts in NC and GA. MCPS is better. Sure each state had a district that was better than where we lived, but even knowing families from those districts I didn’t notice their kids having any noticeably better skills at what would be considered core class. They did have better specials and band programs and extra curricular. But that was just a function of money and parenting outside of school. The only thing we liked better were the school calendar and community culture.
Can you elaborate how community culture was?
I honestly think it’s more of a consistently southern thing than it is just a school thing. You know your neighbors more. Most of the kids in the neighborhood come outside after school and on weekends (despite playing on sport teams). PTAs put on big school carnivals and spring field days. Folks are just generally kinder and more welcoming(even if it’s just a facade and they are mean behind your back). Here everyone seems to be competing and jockeying. Now here it is more diverse which is definitely a plus and because of the competitiveness academics are better and more readily talked about. But, parents here some to be overly obsessed about academics and competitive and helicoptering. Even my kids agree.
