All team sports are NOT fair because the coach can come up with any BS reasons to exclude someone from the team.
in 99% of cases, the reason is that the kid isn't good enough
Really? In our experience in the younger years, the coach’s kid’s friends seem to have a different experience than other kids. As they get older, sometimes kids with irritating parents pay the price or in HS, kids whose parents are a pain get more leeway so the coach doesn’t have the athletic director on their back.
Man this is too often true. People often take "daddy ball" to mean just the coach's kid and assume any team where 4 or 5 kids get preference isn't a "daddy ball" team, missing the entire friend/favored kid aspect. And yes, sometimes coaches really do just favor the better kids or the kids with better attitudes, and sometimes it's a mix of favoring kids who are legitimately good and kids who are friends with the coaches' kids. But youth coaches are human and there's really too much unfair favoritism.
