They've gradually abdicated that role to chase rankings, and the northeastern flagships are now picking up the slack, but they’re decades behind the Midwestern flagships. [/quote] 86% of kids attend college within 500 miles of where they live. That’s today…it was higher in previous years. If the Ivy schools and all the other top east coast privates were 500 miles from Madison, then the school would likely have developed differently because top students would have had tons more options.
