I realized pretty quickly that addiction was a lifelong disease I did not want to have a hold on me.

My advice is to talk to your kids and show them the effects of these substances early and often. You can't prevent them from being around these substances, but you can empower them to make smart decisions and recognize the signs of a problem early.
