Don't be so reductive.  I don't either.  But I'm an adult and I love the richness of many viewpoints and all of the intelligent, interesting people I might otherwise never have met.  I have a few friends-of-friends on FB because their responses were so compelling, so insightful that I couldn't resist getting to know these people better.  Many of them are academics and activists doing work that intrigues me.  Because I put so much time into my family and friends in real life, I don't have time for as many dinner parties as I'd like.  And I'm not going to miss out on knowing someone amazing because she never comes to the East Coast or I'm not likely to get to Riga soon.[/quote]
