They should be doing yearly background checks on all employees.
What do you think that would accomplish? Do you think teachers are being arrested with the school never finding out?
Apparently, they’re hiring them without realizing they have an arrest record, as was the case with Magid.
Do you a DUI/attempted DUI should disqualify someone from ever teaching?
What is MCPS’s policy on that?
DP. MCPS policy requires self-reporting of the crimes that disqualify one from teaching under Maryland law (here). DUI isn't one of those. Teaching is a job where there's a fair amount of substance abuse, so plenty of teachers have DUIs. We can either hire teachers with DUIs or have an even worse teacher shortage, and I choose the former.
Really?! Well that is certainly news to me! Is this the MCEA’s official stance as well?
It's news to you that a lot of teachers drink? You must not know many teachers. I have no idea what MCEA says. I'm not a teacher or affiliated with the union.
Drinking and racking up DUIs are two different things. Responsible adults drink at the right time and right place without getting a DUI. Irresponsible adults who drink and drive risk their life and the lives of others. Your claim that most teachers have DUIs is indeed news to me, since I did not assume most teachers would engage in that kind of reckless and dangerous behavior.
You might want to consult a teacher about the difference between "most" and "plenty."
And you might want to consult a teacher about substantiating baseless claims. How many MCPS teachers have DUIs? I bet you have no clue and yet you made your claim regardless.
No one has this information, not even MCPS since they don't require self-reporting of that. I have an inkling, however, since I've represented more than a handful in DUI cases.
Ask the students. Word gets around pretty fast.
