I began carrying pepper spray on my walks with my dog. If your dog is off leash, not being recalled, and running towards my reactive dog, I am pepper spraying it to heck.
I hate when dogs are off leash where they aren't supposed to be but it's really hard fur me to imagine using pepper spray on a dog-- it really is not their fault. If I could legally get away with pepper spraying their crap owners, I would. But then I'd just get charged with assault. Reading some of these stories of people letting their dogs run right up to people and jump on them (or the one about the dog who was allowed to run up on the neighbors deck!) make me really mad. I've experienced some of these as well, with my young child-- dogs running up to her on trails or at parks or on the street. She developed an extreme fear of digs and while I don't know for certain this is why, I do think the unpredictability of the dogs around us has at least contributed to it. What can we do to fix this? The leash laws exist but there's no enforcement and I don't know what it would look like. Cops posted at parks handing out tickets? Or maybe be social reprobation-- photographing owners who do this and posting it online? How do we make this better instead of being held hostage by bad dog owners who refuse to follow a practical rule intended to keep both dogs and people safe?
