Americans are so funny. Do you think Europeans "Dress for the city" like an American when they come to the US?
This is funny. But Americans definitely dress up differently depending on what city they’re visiting. If they’re going to Miami women wear these long floral maxi dresses. Going to Nashville? Bring out the country boots and Daisy Dukes. Going to Texas? Well that’s a different kind of country, gotta break out the gallon hat. Washington state, yeah, there’s an outfit for that too
Well some Americans do this. I mostly associate it with women in their bachelorette era but there are some men who do it too and there are women who hold onto this their whole lives. I think it's like being Barbie. There's Nashville Honkey Tonk Barbie and LA Chill Barbie and Brooklyn Cool Barbie and Chicago Deep Dish Barbie and Hawaiian Luau Barbie. When Barbie travels internationally you've got Safari Barbie and Gay Paris Barbie and Tokyo Nightclub Barbie. But this is a specific subset of affluent and (let's get real here) kind of vapid American. I think sometimes the motive is insecurity -- like if I can just wear the right outfit then people will like me wherever I go. But also sometimes I get a vibe of arrogance too -- like it's a flex to go buy a whole new wardrobe for every vacation even the long weekends and then post photos of myself in costume to Instagram. People like this also really really like themed costume parties and imposing dress codes on what would otherwise be perfectly normal hang outs with friends.
