If you read the book, Charlie has both parents and neither want to go to the factory. The ticket says you can bring one or two people, and they suggest grandpa joe goes. The movie really does make him look selfish though, I agree.
Actually in the book Charlie’s father does say he’d “love to go” (the mother says she has to stay to look after the grandparents), but states that the person who really deserves to go is Grandpa Joe, since he “seems to know more about it (the factory) than we do”. It doesn’t make any sense why he doesn’t go, since Charlie can bring 2 adults and his dad is unemployed and barely makes any money during the day shoveling anyway. Seems like Roald Dahl should’ve thought up some reason why the dad didn’t go.
So that's where Roald Dahl should have spent more time plugging plot holes? The dad having a free day, yet not accompanying Charlie?
