No, it's because our parents convinced us we'd be killed via landlines, the shower, running to get the mail, etc.
Yup. Information was so limited that every threat was blown up into a BIG THING. Just like I was 100% convinced that I’d regularly encounter quick sand and need a strategy for freeing myself and that there was a good chance I’d be lost in the Bermuda Triangle if I flew to the Caribbean.
Quicksand has not even been a minor plot point in my adult life but I, too, spent a decent amount of time planning quicksand escapes just in case. My child is moderately afraid of thunderstorms because we have moved somewhere where they're extremely rare. I didn't mind a friendly summer storm but spring was a terrifying time for me as a kid- I grew up in tornado alley and we had weekly tornado alarm testing and monthly drills. So the right kind of thunderstorm was terrifying. Tornado watches and warnings were much more vague so we would go to the cellar (with our dolls and stuffed animals and pillows and blankets) more often and for longer than people do now. I blame it all on the beginning of Wizard of Oz.
