As a ref, though, I found it painful to watch. He screwed up basic things like this (from the Laws of the Game):

"Once the referee has decided to caution or send off a player, play must not be restarted until the sanction has been administered, unless the non-offending team takes a quick free kick, has a clear goal-scoring opportunity and the referee has not started the disciplinary sanction procedure."

The ref had the card in his hand when Uruguay took the quick kick. Then he suddenly raises both hands to signal "advantage."

And then there's the time he waited until the USA had moved the ball 40 yards up the field before blowing the whistle to give them a free kick way back in their own half. Pulisic was at midfield with the ball and momentum. It would've been a good advantage call if he hadn't stopped the US attack dead!
