We were notified this morning that Principals received a communication from Dr. Peter Moran, Chief of Schools, indicating that MCPS intends to move forward with reducing allocations in schools to increase class sizes. See Dr. Moran’s full message here.

This reduction will occur even as the system awaits full information on the total number of retirements and resignations for FY24 and will likely result in hundreds of additional involuntary transfers across our schools as of June 5th. We are shocked and appalled that MCPS plans to move forward with cuts that DIRECTLY hurt kids, hurt staff, and create a terrible learning and working environment. Meanwhile, MCPS executive leadership has yet to disclose how they are sharing in the burden of these cuts.

Chronic underfunding and gross mismanagement of MCPS have brought our schools to a breaking point. We, as educators and community members, cannot sit idly by while MCPS leadership dismantles public education. The Board of Education has failed and MCPS leadership has failed. The recent meetings of the unions with the superintendent and her top staff to review options have exposed the grim reality that MCEA unit members—and our students—will be forced to bear the brunt of the lack of funding.

The County Executive Marc Elrich and Montgomery County Council have a right to be distrustful of MCPS leaders, but their failure to fully fund the MCPS budget request has led to a terrible predicament. Do county leaders let our schools sink, or do they help right that ship and hold leadership accountable?

We as educators must call upon the entire Montgomery County community to stand up and fight back for our kids and our public schools. The County Executive and County Council have both the authority and ability to stop these cuts and hold MCPS accountable.
