Special education teacher here. You definitely want to email his new teachers individually and mention his plan, so he doesn’t get lost in the shuffle. I would get a writing tutor this summer who is well-versed in LD. Make sure he gets plenty of sleep during the school year and limit the screens. Good luck! And make sure he knows what his accommodations are and how to use or ask for them.
Thank you for these suggestions. I will email each teacher individually. The ELA teacher has already met with the 6th grade ELA teacher to discuss the kids moving over, and she's the one who has been most helpful in recognizing DS's strengths and providing informal accommodations. Sleep and screens are constant challenges! How did you know?!! And we do need to get a writing tutor. The psychologist mentioned a few programs he recommends. It's not just the planning process that's a challenge for DS; it's also the actual handwriting. His fine motor skills are poor. So he has all these great ideas that he struggles to organize and then struggles again to get on paper. We'd like him to learn to type, but it's also important for him to write.
