Listened to an interview with Batya the other day. I think her book is spot on.

I am not a Republican,  I am independent.  I grew up upper middle class but have recent enough working class roots to understand why people have embraced Trump and populism.   These people do not want to be the beneficiaries of government redistribution largesse.  They want dignity of work and the ability to build a stable and comfortable life.  The whole working class has been undermined by both parties, who are more interested in keeping labor costs low for the benefit of big business. [/quote]

Except they are the beneficiaries.
OSHA regulations make their workplace safe.
Minimum wage ensures they are not totally exploited.
They drive on roads to get to their work. The safety of the cars and roads are regulated by the government.
The food they eat is inspected with minimum safety standards to ensure they don't get sick.
They went to a school that had minimum standards to ensure they learned the basics.

What is the largesse? The raping of the treasury by big business? [/quote]
