My Freshman has MISA tomorrow. Regular days Tuesday and Thursday. Half day Wednesday for tests he's not taking. AP Friday morning and then I guess he can go home? It's unclear.
How? Is he cleared from all his afternoon classes that aren’t AP?
Einstein excuses kids taking AP or IB classes from the rest of that school day. So if you only take one exam, you can come in late/leave early. They sent out a Google release form for parents to sign, but my kid actually filled theirs out for me because I couldn't get the link to work, so it's really just legal CYA on the school's part. And the state testing is done in the students' regular classes, so they've instituted a block schedule Tues-Fri to make the periods long enough. Those (non-AP or IB) students will go through their full day, and are not excused before/after testing. But again, it looks like every school is handling things differently, so everyone should confirm with their individual admin. Without the name of the school, nobody can say for sure whether your freshman is excused.
It would have been nice if they told us this as it wasn't clear and we got a call from our kid to come get them.
From Einstein? The stuff about being excused before or after AP/IB exams was in Mr Brown's weekly bulletin for a couple of weeks, and it was also in the April 19th email from Ms Rivera with the exam schedules: "If an AP or IB exam is scheduled in the morning, MCPS allows students to be excused from classes for the remainder of the day. If an AP or IB exam is scheduled for the afternoon, MCPS allows students to be excused from class until the scheduled exam time. Juniors and Seniors taking an AP or IB exam in May 2024 must complete the permission form before April 25, 2024, to be excused from classes on exam days." It can be tough to wade through all those messages to figure out what's relevant and what isn't, for sure! But this was definitely repeated in a couple of places, and my kid said teachers had reminded them about the form in class.
It certainly would be nice if MCPS posted this somewhere and shared with all HS AP Testing Coordinators and staff. As certainly this is clear at all schools and teachers are certainly taking attendance. Heck, my kid got marked absent in classes while taking an AP exam.
Attendance really does not matter
