Maryland may be a take state, but that is only because of its proximity to DC.  The real takes states are the deep red ones that have been subsized through the Federal govt for decades and decades.  In my view, the North lost the War, because we have been paying the bills forever.[/quote]

Red State "takers" - 
High black populations on government welfare
Older populations, so more Social Security
Military bases protecting your ability to be prosperous without sending your kids to the military
Farm subsidies for corporations - not exactly red state voters
